Journal Entry 3

Date: 25. 4. 2021
Activity: Scripting, finishing the game
Time spent: 4h

I left off last time with all of the important parts of the level placed and configured, so the most important work for this time was coding in the puzzles. Everything went mostly smoothly, the only weird thing I encountered was rotating the puzzle 2 indicators. Rotation in 3D feels quite complex, however, I only had to rotate the indicators in 2D, so I found the way pretty quickly using google.

Once I was finished with scripting, I took some time to decorate the level. I redrew the tilemap so it looks a bit less rectangular. I also placed some sprites here and there. The last touch were the info posts. The way info posts interact with the dialogue overlay is a bit wierd. It took me like 3 info posts until I realized that I don't need a separate dialogue instance for every info post.

The last step was the recording of the gameplay. I was a bit worried I would have to find and learn some screen recording software, but I found out that my graphics card driver package includes a screen recording functionality. I had to take several attemps to record the gameplay because I repeatedly failed at stopping at info posts for a reasonable amount of time to showcase the text. Once I felt happy with the result I watched the recording a spotted a Steam overlay popping up. I was a bit angry at this point but I decided  to record the gameplay once more. It's still not perfect though, only after cutting the video and rewatching it I realized that the recording included my cursor. I might rerecord the video in the future, but at this point I'm happy everything is done.
